It's also designed with the Freo AFL strip specifically in mind.

If you want to try this with other colours, keep in mind that they may look funny from a distance (eg blue and yellow might look green, which is why you should consider adding white)

THIS IS MY PATTERN. I designed it myself.
If you decide to share, I'd prefer a linkback to this post rather than a copy/paste, and it would be very nice if you could credit me (Toni Laws) as the designer when sharing pictures of your finished work.

Right, now that all the nasty business is out of the way, let's get to hooking!

If you haven't made a crocheted tartan blanket before, it looks amazingly complicated and is about the easiest blanket in the world to make.

I've used a 5mm hook and Paintbox Simply Aran, in
248 dark purple
200 white
I used about 10 skeins of purple and 7 of white.
It's a nice soft acrylic, and the ply is quite thick (feels like a 10 ply)

This blanket is big. If you wanted a smaller lap blanket, just use a smaller ply yarn (a small 8 ply or even 6ply, if you can get it in the right purple)

Paintbox is about $3.30 for a 184m skein, which makes it a good price, and you can get it at

www.lovecrochet.com

I use US terms, and here is a comparison chart if you prefer UK terms:

The blanket is done in 2 halves.

The first part is to make the basic filet mesh, which is simply made from

a US double crochet and chain.
The second part is to weave long lengths of yarn vertically through the spaces, which forms the tartan.

Please watch this YouTube video to see the technique to create a basic filet mesh.

To create the blanket I've made, which measures about 160x160 cm, use this video technique and these instructions to create the basic mesh.

ch 250 in dark purple

1. 1 dc (double crochet) in 6th chain from hook.
*ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next ch.
rep from * to end.

PLEASE NOW CHECK YOU HAVE 123 SPACES.

2. ch 4, sk 1 ch sp, dc in next dc.
*ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in next dc
rep from * to end, working last dc in the ch3 at the beg of the previous row.

3. ch 4, turn, sk 1, dc in next dc.
*ch 1, sk 1, dc in next dc.
Rep from * to end, working last dc in top of ch 3 from beg of previous row.

You will repeat row 3 till you have finished the blanket.
The only changes you will make are changing colours. This is always done at the end of a row.

To change colours, finish the row and end off the yarn. Start the new row in your new colour.
Every few rows, get into the habit of counting your spaces, making sure you always have 123. It is possible to make a mistake and skip a space, which will ruin the blanket.

The colour pattern is as follows:

15 rows of purple

5 rows of white
3 rows of purple
5 rows of white
3 rows of purple
5 rows of white

15 rows of purple

5 rows of white
3 rows of purple
**5 rows of white** HALFWAY THERE!
3 rows of purple
5 rows of white

Now congratulate yourself, because the hardest part is over.

Get a bottle of wine, load up something good on Netflix, and start darning those ends in.

When your basic mesh is all tidied up, clear the table and lay it down so the stripes are running vertically to you.
Starting at the corner, you're going to weave long lengths of yarn through each of the rows of chain spaces, at right angles to the stripes of the mesh.

Please watch this YouTube video to see how the technique is done.

You will follow the same colour pattern as for the basic filet mesh (15 rows of purple, 5 of white etc) but instead of crocheting those, you are going to use 3 long lengths of yarn to form each row.

I use a piece of scrap yarn in a different colour (hot pink will work well).
It needs to be loosely measured as long as the blanket, plus a bit for weaving, plus a bit for a knot at each end, plus a few inches for a fringe at each end.
This will give you the length you can use to measure all your purple and white lengths. Better to have too much than too little.

Cut 3 pieces of purple to length, then use your crochet hook, a BLUNT ENDED needle, a safety pin or a bodkin to begin weaving, and use the technique Tanis describes in the video above.
The next row will alternate, and you'll begin to see the weaving effect right away.

You need to do the weaving on a flat surface, to ensure your tension is kept even.
The blanket might start to look a little bit bowed but don't worry, as long as you keep it flat while you're working, it will even out as you go.

May?) I decided to try crochet.

My nana tried to teach me when I was a kid, and Mrs Rolley had a go in Home Ec in about 1978, and both times I sat there with yarn in one hand, a hook in the other, and a look of complete bewilderment on my face.
I simply could not connect the two hands. They felt like foreign objects, and my brain refused to have anything to do with them.

You might think this would lead me to believe I would have trouble this time round, but you would be wrong.
I sailed into the project, full of confidence, and then, as it became more and more obvious that I was, in fact, a crochet idiot, my confidence morphed into dogged determination.
I know, right? it took me by surprise, too. Normally I give up at the first sign of difficulty.

Did you know that YouTube is full of video tutorials that are not in the least bit helpful?
I know this because I'm fairly sure I found most of the begin-to-crochet ones that actually didn't teach me anything apart from how to make dirty, tight little knots.
Eventually, though, I hit the jackpot.
I found Mikey.
And I love him, more than a little bit. He saved my sanity.

So if, like me, you are thinking of taking the plunge into the dark and strange world of hooking, or crochet if you want to be perfectly correct, may I present, for your viewing pleasure, the wonderful...
MAGIC MIKEY.

lesson 1: holding the yarn and hook

lesson 2: hook size, gauge, and chaining

lesson 3: how to single crochet (US term) or double crochet (UK/Aus term)

That should get you started, though he has plenty more available!

You should try and chain a few hundred kilometres of yarn to get the rhythm going. If you can manage it in less kilometres, go you!

Once you feel confident that you have some sort of tension and technique happening, try moving on to learning the single/double stitch (depending on whether you're American or English/Aussie.
The conflict between the US and UK terminology is VERY confusing.
Here's a list of the basic terms:

If you can, make a copy of the pattern you're working from, and substitute the correct terms so you don't get confused.

Your hook may use an American or UK size ( a number or letter) or a metric size. Here's a comparison chart for that, too.

I took inspiration from the beach theme with my photos, and the yellow, then added other papers to pick up the colours from my daughters' bathers. I really like the effect of the black outlining, though I wish my eye was straighter! I can see plenty of places where I have stuck things down crooked.
I've been doing a lot of patterned paper backgrounds instead.

Anyway, decided to have a bash at the January challenge at Black with 2, and here's my attempt.

I'm not at all certain that this will pass, but since I love the LO, that's OK. I'm really happy with this one, mostly because I wouldn't have thought to scrap these photos otherwise!
They were taken on holiday at Herberton Historic Village in 2008, and show my sweet teenaged boy trying to let his little sister carry the umbrella. CUTE AS!

So here's my LO, and if you want to join in, click the link and take a look at the criteria.

You could have knocked me down with a feather!!
I'm so pleased and very excited to get to know the other team members. I've had a bit of a stickybeak at their work, and you should, too! There's a list somewhere on the side there ------>

If you want to play along, just go to the blog and add your favourite creation for the month. There are usually NO criteria, and it can be any kind of scrappy project (LO, ATC, OTP, etc) (wow, how much does that resemble a bowl of alphabet soup???)

We had a partner assigned, and we made a set of 3 ATCs and swapped with our partner -- I got the gorgeous Miss Terri as my partner, and here are the fab ATCs she sent me:

Her example is stunning, and here's the link to her blog to see more of her fabulous and delicious work.

My take on the challenge was to scrap a miniature vampire killing kit. (yes, that's how my brain works).

I took a perfectly innocent little tin, and inked the outside with Espresso alcohol ink.

Then I papered the inside with scraps of G45 paper I had left over from the cabinet.

I made some stakes from toothpicks, a mallet from a scrap of dowel and a piece of toothpick (please be impressed by that, I actually had to drill a hole in the dowel to push the toothpick into), then added a bottle of Holy Water, a cross charm, and a Bible.

Cleverly, I managed to make a Satanic Bible by accidentally gluing the cover on upside-down.
I assure you, this was an accident, not a statement, and I'll add it to the List of Things I Have To Answer For.

(a little background information -- Edgar Allen Poe was the author of the poem, The Raven (Nevermore!) and some spooky stories you may have heard of -- The Tell-Tale Heart and The Masque of the Red Death to mention just two.
I was a bit of a fan-girl back when I was a teenager.

A Cabinet of Curiosities was a bit like a mini-museum.
It might be a single cabinet, or a room, or a collection of rooms.
It might be themed or simply an eclectic collection of -- well, curiosities.)

I saw a golf-trophy box in one of our local op-shops a few months back and immediately thought I could make something with it (because seriously? golf balls? who displays GOLF BALLS?)
I handed over my $5 (I know!) and hurried home to sand and generally distress the frame.

You can see the holes that the golf balls sit in.
Rather than fill those in, because I'm basically too lazy, I tipped the box upside down, so the holes were in the 'ceilings' of each compartment.
The centre held a piece of removable glass for a photo to go in (so you can have a photo of yourself with your special balls, I guess) but I didn't want the glass so I covered it with paper.
I also papered the backs of each compartment, and the 'floors' of all but the centre one.
Then I began shopping and filling each area.

So here we go, on a Tour of Mums' Spooky Cupboard (as it is known in our house)

Here is the whole Cabinet.
You can see the holes in the top shelf, I know, but that's because I shot the photo from slightly below.
The Cabinet sits at eye-level normally.

The papers I've used are Graphic45 'Race For Time' and 'Genuine Article', from the Old Curiosity Shoppe range.

Some close-ups of the top shelf show:

- a bottle of graveyard dirt (coffee grounds) and a bell (which I unaccountably didn't manage to photograph!) I put these in because of the Victorian fear of being buried alive, which spawned a number of horror stories.

- a Victorian teacup and saucer, given to me many years ago by a friend.

- a clock (from Tim Holtz) with the hands at a little before midnight (from the Masque of the Red Death)

- a mask which I made from Sculpey and black eyelash fringing, from The Masque of the Red Death and also a little bit of Assassins Creed (dottore masks) crept in here.

- a locket with photos of Poe and his wife, Virginia.

I bought the locket on eBay for a couple of dollars, and toned it down with Ranger alcohol inks (Ginger, Latte and Meadow)

- a paper rose from Kaisercraft

- a tiny crab shell sent to me by my awesome son

I adore these bottles -- they were among the first things I made and I enlisted some help on the internets to come up with the titles (thanks Rick!)
We have --
Sweet Malice (with snipped Kaisercraft posies)
Spirit of Vitriol (coloured with lettuce alcohol ink, swirled inside the vial and heated)
Bitter Acrimony (bicarb of soda)

All the bottles are a mixture of Tim Holtz corked vials, and bottles I bought at my local thrift store.
- the labels came from Cathe Holden.

- the black roses are Kaisercraft, and the little shell came from my beach.
- and what would a spooky cupboard be without a spider? this charm came from my2angels

Some of these photos I took before I added the rose (Kaiser, again) but I've used them because they were more clear than the ones I took later.

- the angel is a Prima Shabby Chic Treasure, and I grunged him up with Iced Spruce and Black Soot Distress Inks (from Tim Holtz) so that he looked like he might belong in a cemetery.

- then I decided he needed something to 'sit' on, so I cut and glued a chippie birdbath from Dusty Attic to fit, then inked it with Vintage Photo and Black Soot Distress Inks. Then I took it away and forgot to put it back for the photo. Not sure if it will make a re-appearance.

- then I thought cemetery gates would be cool, and I planned to fit them at the front of the window.
I hunted for 2 days, and the best I could find that fitted the image in my head were these Kaisercraft gates.
I bought them from Olga at Sassy Scrapper, and she faffed around endlessly for me.
THANKYOU, Olga!

- when the gates arrived, I inked them with Vintage Photo and Black Soot, and then realised they cut off too much of the view at the front, so I placed them behind the cherub, and by sheer good fortune, they fitted neatly.
Which was lucky because that cherub would not come off his paper without a fight.

- I then added 'ivy', which came from some cheap mini-wreaths I got in a card-making frenzy a few Christmases ago.

- the absinthe label was printed from the net and distressed a bit, the bottle is from Tim Holtz.
I put some Meadow and Lettuce alcohol inks in the bottle and swirled and heated till I burnt my fingers, but I got the look I was after and that's all that counts, right?

- the key is ---- ummmm.... one of Tims'?

- the fractured doll is from Tim Holtz, and I puzzled for ages whether to ink it or not.
In the end I decided to stay with the alabaster look, but I think it would have looked equally cool crazed and inked.

- the 'nest' is some fuzz that dropped off some firewood, and I rolled it into a scruffy nest shape.

- I have no idea where those roses came from.
- I spent literally days looking for a vintage wooden hand.
When I saw this one (which is porcelain) I wasn't sure if it would be exactly right but I love it.
It came from Mary Poppins Vintage.

- the skull picture in the background was d/l from the net

- I boiled chicken necks to get those bones in the bottle at the back.
The dogs were very happy with my experiment.

- the bottle on the left contains watch parts.

- the bottle lying down has some dandelion seeds in it, collected from the roadside near my house.
Have you ever tried to make a human heart from Sculpey?
NOT an exercise for the give-up-easily-types (like me).
In the end I bought some lamb hearts from the supermarket, and modelled a heart on those.
The dogs were also happy with this experiment.

This window is inspired by the Poe story, The Tell-Tale Heart.

- I put a railway schedule at the back, which was printed off the net, because the display needed some height.

- the bottle of 'blood' is Cranberry alcohol ink from Tim Holtz (note to self, buy more Cranberry ink!)

- the HEART key is also Tims' and the chain came from the raven skull.
And finally, these amazing little books were made for me by my friend, Kym.
I haven't finished with this project.
I don't really know if it will ever be finished.
I plan to add some tiny black feathers, a bee or a blowfly (dead, of course!) and some honeycomb.
I also found a tiny paper wasp nest (empty!) which will be added into a bottle.
And then I need to work out how to display the entire box to keep dust and little fingers out.
In the meantime, it's truly nice to just look at it all.
I absolutely adore this!!
It's so suiting my headspace right now, and Amanda took great care to craft it specially for me, even though it's much darker than her usual style.
Hop over to her blog and tell her how cool it is, won't you?

I adored the show in the 70s, but the New Who has taken me to new heights of geeky fantasy, and so of course I had to do something about it in my SMASH album.

So here we go -- a little trip through my mind. Scary, hey?

The left page looks kind of plain like this -- but then the TARDIS itself doesn't give much hint of what lies behind that blue door, either.
I wanted these pages to reflect the idea of the TARDIS being bigger on the inside, so the flaps open up to reveal much, much more.

The first flap lifts to reveal pictures of the TARDIS, and a couple of quotes from the show.
Fans will recognise the episodes these came from.
The second flap folds down to reveal more pictures of the TARDIS, and another pocket-page.
I used a Tim Holtz key as the key to the TARDIS -- it could have been SLIGHTLY more perfect if it has said TIME instead of LIFE but I'm still stoked with it.
The 'real' key doesn't have any string on it, I know that, but this one needed something so I used some gorgeous bakers' twine.
It's lying on top of an entry from The Journal of Impossible Things, another favourite episode, in which the Doctor has to hide out on Earth in 1913. He has no memory of himself as the Doctor, but has odd 'dreams' which he records in a journal. Of Impossible Things, obviously.
More pocket pages.
These ones feature what is universally acknowledged as the scariest episode ever -- Blink.
The monsters in this story are weeping angel statues, that creep up on you while you're not looking -- hence you can't even blink if one is after you.
I wanted this series of images to show the angel getting closer till it revealed itself...

The tape is another SMASH product, which I LOVE. Also I've attached 'flags' to the plane tickets (SMASH) and there are stickynotes as well (also SMASH accessories).

Here's another page I have done -- not sure if it's finished yet....

To make the tree, I glued paper strips down onto some white card, then laid the tree diecut (Tims) onto it, and free-hand drew the leaves shape around the trunk. Then it was just a matter of cutting and gluing them together.

The birds' nest is made by wrapping string round two fingers, then gluing it to a disc of card, and finishing with some stickybacked pearls. I jabbed a blue heart pin through it, too, but you'll have to squint to see it.
It was a fantastic day! though it started WAY too early (in my head I was still on WA time, and I got up at 3 am. SOOOO tired)

Then we got busy.
And I mean BUSY.
We completed 10 tags before lunch, and then another 10 after, and Tim is such a master of running classes that we kept up a great pace for the whole day -- not so fast that you get lost or flustered, and not so slow that you get bored.
Plus, the whole time he talks and drops really cool tips and techniques.
Let's face it, he's probably forgotten more about inks and paints than the rest of us will ever learn!

And then The Big Moment -- I actually got to speak to him, and get my picture taken with him (ugh) and get his autograph.

Truly, if you ever get the chance to do one of Tim's workshops? GO FOR IT!!
He's a really good teacher -- even the techniques I didn't think I would like were enjoyable.
And he is SUCH the nicest guy, it was a real pleasure to meet him.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4804713390523195798.post-29492641138127521652012-03-27T21:22:00.000+08:002012-03-27T21:22:25.356+08:00playing with ink. OR making a mess and loving it.I'm a bit of a product junkie, but then I get intimidated by how to use the things I've bought, and so they sit in my stash gazing reproachfully at me and gathering dust.

Does that happen to you, too?

A big part of it for me is not knowing why or how certain things work, so I never know 'what else' I can do with it.

THIS is why I'm loving Tim Holtzs' Creative Chemistry 101 class. Knowing how a product is made, how it works, why it does what it does, means I can think of loads of ways to try it out without having to see if someone else has done it first.

Just recently, I joined an Tim Holtz inspired mixed media ATC swap, where we have to use at least one TH product. NOT A PROBLEM!! I reckon I can find at least one!

So I made three different ATCs, using different techniques, and even *gasp!* EXPERIMENTING!!

One of the things I tried was using alcohol ink on mica. You know, mica? the must-have a few years ago? yeah, well, I bought some and then didn't know what to use it for, so it just sat in a drawer, languishing and making me feel guilty.
Turns out, you can colour it with alcohol ink and then layer it over a photo or image and get this amazing vintage look.

I loved the freedom of exploring as I wanted to, loved using something I'd had forever, loved the result, and felt so good for stepping out of my comfort zone.

And here are the ATCs, finished and ready to post. (I made a set for me to keep as well)

Seriously, if you get hung up on using things 'properly', give yourself permission to play with product. Give yourself permission to try, to have a go, and even to mess up.
You'll learn way more that way than by following 'proper' techniques.

It's ALL about the process of creating.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4804713390523195798.post-69558518722113480272012-03-23T17:38:00.000+08:002012-03-23T17:38:44.827+08:00how to get some time to yourself...Tim Holtz is a GENIUS! Not only does he make the Big Girls happy with his Ideas of Awesome, but he also keeps the Little Girls happy!
I thought she might not be able to handle the brush too well (control the amount of water etc) but she did better than I did! I'll have to get her her own brush, and some 'girly' stamps, I think. And some stamping paper, and some watercolour paper, and a craft apron!!

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the process, but early on in the month, I quit the scrapbooking forum I had been on for a couple of years, took my scrappy balls in both hands, and started up my own forum.

In amongst the angst of installing software, rounding up a DT, sorting themes, trying to install a gallery and failing, organising our first challenges, and several meetings with our gorgeous shop owner, Pia, I could have done without the stress of a daily tag.

BUT I DID IT. All of it. (well, not the gallery. I gave up on that and I'm having a professional install it for me.)

I am still in need of guest DTs. If you know someone who'd like a guest stint, of three months, with a kit per month, let me know or point them to www.jellybeanscrappers.com.

And big thanks to my girls, who supported me and helped me through what was a difficult decision. You know who you are. xUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4804713390523195798.post-20916674494635276302012-02-28T14:26:00.000+08:002012-02-28T14:26:13.274+08:00a month of music - DAY TWENTY EIGHTTHE FINAL SONG
I canNOT believe I got here. I'm notorious for starting things, and not finishing them, and I wasn't sure I could do this, so I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself!

JUST BREATHE by PEARL JAM

(Maxabella pointed out that "Just Breathe" might be a little awkward to be playing at a funeral, which made me laugh. Because I hadn't thought about the title. It's this that gets me
"Hold me till I die. Meet you on the other side")
I did a blog post about this song on ChickChat.

Anyway, I've used Kaiser paper as the background and I cut the butterflies from Kaiser paper too. My Dymo made the word strips and I kind of like that they're really unobtrusive because I DON'T WANNA DIE!

Here's the song

and here's the lyrics

Yes I understand that life every must end, aw huh,..
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh,..
I’m a lucky man to count on both hands
The ones I love,..

Some folks just have one,
Others they got none, aw huh,..

Stay with me,..
Let’s just breathe.

Practiced are my sins,
Never gonna let me win, aw huh,..
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh,..
Yeh, I don’t wanna hurt, there’s so much in this world
To make me bleed.

Stay with me,..
You’re all I see.

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see,..
As I come clean.

I wonder everyday
as I look upon your face, aw huh,..
I used Ferrero Rocher papers to make the tree, and the gold foil to make the labels and star.
The music paper is by Kaiser.
To make the tag front, I used T!ms' enamelling technique. It gives a smooth bumpy texture with a fair bit of very subtle colour variation. And I stamped circles on with Staz-On.
I cut the winged heart from Tims' die, and coloured the crown with Stamp-It Fine Gold embossing powder.
I cut three sets of wings and then trimmed and layered to make them look feathery.
The heart was cut from a scrap of music paper and the swirly heart was covered with red foil from last years' Easter egg. (hoarder, much?)

The tag back is covered with strips of tape and then my trusty Dymo labeller with clear tape and some scraps of paper helped me get the title on.
